The multifunction Matheson Optometrists – TheraTears PD Ruler
Matheson Optometrists in conjunction with Viewtwo Ltd, Matheson Optometrists have produced a novel optical ruler. For a limited time the ruler will be available at no charge to eyecare practitioners requesting stock or samples of the Thera Tears product.
As you can see from the illustration the ruler has many interesting features. In addition to monocular and binocular pupillary distance measurements it has HVID and pupil size capability.
The latter is especially useful in the field of laser surgery assessment trials and Rigid Gas Permeable Lens fitting. Our problem is always to measure the pupil size in low light conditions as my need to see the measuring device in the dark. The hemisphere design enables accurate assessment using the infra red cameras which many pieces of optometric equipment now posses, eg fundas cameras, autorefractors etc. By using this ruler in conjunction with the infrared camera we are able to take Scotopic measurements without having to buy an expensive pupillometer.
The Thera Tears ruler comes in a robust flexible dark blue plastic which has the further advantage of being much more visible on the typical white dispensing table. Hopefully the cry “where’s the p.d. ruler” will be heard less often!
